With Your Help, We are Making The World a Better Place

Thomas Ridley’s 1 Like Me is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing reentry services to those returning to communities in central Indiana from jail or prison. Focusing on employment, housing, life skills, and removing civil legal barriers, 1 Like Me’s mission is to reduce recidivism through supportive services and encourage desistance by presenting opportunities. Founded by a returning citizen, Thomas Ridley, and a law professor, Lahny Silva, Thomas Ridley’s 1 Like Me aims to instill a real sense of hope to those returning home.

Our organization provides a variety of services and serves as a referral source for the formerly incarcerated population. The services we offer include forklift certification, computer skills, and driver’s license assistance.  We refer 1 Like Me participants to other agencies such as Café for HSE programming or Goodwill Industries for job training.  1 Like Me also partners with local community organizations to provide a continuum of reentry services.  One such partnership includes a law student organization, the Second Chance Reentry Assistance Program or SCRAP, which offers services aimed at overcoming civil legal barriers.  This partnership has resulted in a combination of both pre and post release services.

Our work transcends gender, race, and age as we serve people from all walks of life. 1 Like Me has recently intensified our efforts in the most troubled zip codes and is now dedicating resources to young males between the ages of 18 and 25 in those areas. 1 Like Me understands the worry, uneasiness and fear of “ what awaits,” that newly released individuals often experience.  We particularly understand the hopelessness, despair and disillusion felt by those returning to struggling and impoverished communities.  1 Like Me is committed to being a First Responder that stands on the frontline aggressively providing services, resources, information, and hope!

See you there

Words from our Founder

During the 22yrs of incarceration I served in the federal penitentiary, I watched as countless young men who looked like myself “came and went” from the penitentiary, only to return shortly on new charges and convictions.

This was Troubling/ Offensive is more like the way I really felt to see all these guys Seemingly “playing with there freedom” Coming and going in and out of the prison.

As a result of my feelings, I started challenging them on this; coming and going and returning to prison. Overwhelmingly they would all seemingly respond with the same answer: Big T (which is what they called me) there is nothing out there for us to help us stay out of here. Nothing!!

I, of course didn’t believe that and definitely wasn’t accepting that answer. However, once the sentencing laws changed, and I who was serving 2 life sentences without the possibility of parole was re- sentenced and released and it was my turn to locate services / help that would assist me in my efforts to have a successful Reacclimation into Society. I found that just as I had thought there was services/support/ etc out there. But those that offered these services etc hadn’t and wasn’t doing a go job of making it known to those of us that were “ Returning citizens” that these services were available, and how they/we could get them.

Being now / then aware of the problem and having vowed to those I left behind in the prison system that I would be out here to help them when they got released, I vowed along with my partner and and charter board member ( and best friend ), that we would form our “Reentry Company” and make sure that everyone returning from prison would get the word that the best quality help available awaited them at “Thomas Ridley’s 1Like me reentry assistant.”
